The Sydney Prizes and the Neilma Sidney Prize

The Sydney Prize is awarded monthly to an outstanding piece of journalism that serves the common good. Winners are rewarded with $500 honorarium and a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. The Hillman Foundation also presents a biannual Sidney Prize for investigative journalism that addresses a social injustice, such as the case of Abortion Bans That Delay Emergency Care.

The annual Sydney Film Festival award ceremony, presented to a selection of the most audacious, cutting-edge and courageous films from our Official Competition line-up, boasts nine illustrious prizes and a record-breaking prize pool of more than $160,000.

Named in memory of Professor Philip Sidney Ardern, this prize promotes the study of Old and Middle English literature and language but is open to all kinds of undergraduate writing on any subject in English. The winner of the prize receives a cash award and is honored in a special awards ceremony held in May each year.

This book prize is given in recognition of the best scholarly work published on the history of science and technology that can be understood by non-specialists as well as specialists. It is awarded by SHOT, the Society for the History of Science and Technology, with a cash award and commemorative plaque.

This scholarship, founded by the late Addison Brown LL.B. 1855, is awarded to an HLS student for the best paper written during the academic year that analyses a legal issue from a economic perspective. The winning paper is chosen by a committee of students and faculty members.

The Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize, supported by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation and named after the founder of Overland, seeks outstanding short fiction – no more than 3000 words – inspired by travel. Entries are judged on literary merit, creativity and imagination. The first-place winner will receive $5000 in prize money and be published in Overland’s autumn 2024 edition, while two runners-up will each receive $750.

The Neilma Sidney Prize is open to all writers, including Australians and internationals at any stage of their careers. Writers can enter the competition by subscribing to Overland for a full year here; subscribers are eligible to compete at a discounted subscriber rate. Winners will be announced in June 2024. All entries will be considered for publication by Overland. The prize is not transferable. The prize judges are Laura Elvery, Paige Clark and Michael Winkler. The judges reserve the right not to select a winner. The winner and runners-up will be notified by email. The winner and runners-up will be posted online alongside Overland’s autumn 2024 issue.
