For the first time, a team from an Indonesian university has won the prize for best overall presentation at the global finals of the SGP, held in New York in November last year. The team, from the Institut Pertanian Bogor, presented their research on kebun binatang, a local variety of banana which is grown in small plots on terraced rice fields. Its roots run deep into the soil, and it produces a large volume of fruit which is in high demand from the local markets and as an ingredient for many processed foods.
The team consists of two undergraduate students, a postgraduate student and three graduate students from Bogor, who are all members of a local women’s group, the Association of Young Women Farmers. They have used their SGP grant to produce a promotional video for the local market and to increase awareness of the product among the region’s consumers and producers. The video explains the role of kebun binatang in reducing poverty and in the eradication of hunger, as well as the environmental and social benefits of growing and selling the fruit.
SGPs are like traditional parlays, but with the added advantage that all legs of the bet come from the same contest. So the success of one bet does not influence the outcome of another, which is a common problem in sports betting when correlated bets are combined.
