The Hongkong Prize and Its Winners
The hongkong prize, which is sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited and Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation, encourages scientific researchers in Hong Kong to persist in innovative exploration and transform their research results into benefits for society. It enhances the local technological and innovative atmosphere, making our city more attractive to global top scientists and nurturing forward-looking scientists who will contribute to building Hong Kong into an international science and technology hub.
In the field of science and technology, many Hong Kong people have made significant contributions, bringing joy to the community and providing impetus for further development. Among them, Prof Tsui Chi-wai, a well-known physicist and former chairman of the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences, is renowned for his pioneering work on superconductivity and neutron scattering. His achievements have boosted the reputation of the city and its scientific researchers, enabling the scientific community in Hong Kong to develop faster and stronger than ever before.
Another exemplary Hongkonger is the HK Phil, which has completed a four-year project to record Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Despite facing several challenges, including two ligament ruptures and surgery, the orchestra has continued to strive for excellence in performing and recording this complex music. The HK Phil’s achievements have won the heart of the public and earned recognition worldwide.
As a result, the HK Phil has received numerous awards, including a prestigious Gold Medal of the National Cultural Foundation in China and the Asia Pacific Cultural Heritage Award of the International Council for Traditional Culture. It has also been named the Best Orchestra in the World by BBC Music Magazine.
This year, the HK Prize has attracted more than 1,500 applications, with all winners showing great potential to be future Hong Kong champions. The selection panel consists of eminent academics and industry experts. They will select the outstanding finalists and awardees based on their scientific and research achievements and the potential to advance the city and the rest of the world.
We wish all the finalists and awardees good luck in the competition! You can read about their stories in the HK Prize website.
