The Sidney Prize and the Neilma Sidney Manuscript Prize

The Sidney Prize is awarded annually to the best paper written by an undergraduate in any field, as determined by judges who review all submissions. The prize includes a cash award and a certificate.

The prize honors the memory of Sidney Black, a former faculty member in the Department of Engineering at the University of the Highlands and Islands. This annual award is given in his name to inspire new female engineers to achieve their full potential.

One of the largest prizes at the College, this award is offered to a student who has been accepted to the program and will complete their studies by the end of the year. The winning candidate will receive a stipend of PS500.

Students are required to submit a paper of no more than 10 pages, double spaced, and must be accompanied by a letter from their professor or advisor. This document will provide a reference for the committee.

This award is aimed at students who have demonstrated a significant level of academic achievement and have made an impact in their community. They may be struggling financially, have ambitious career aims or are looking to start their own business.

In recent years, students have included members of the Royal Navy, political cartoonists, alchemists, spies, murderers, ghosts and arsonists. It is a testament to the power of this award that so many outstanding students have won it in its history.

Overland is delighted to announce the shortlist for this year’s Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize. The prize is sponsored by the Malcolm Robertson Foundation and seeks powerful and original stories that take an Australian travel theme as a central theme.

The judges this year were Julie Koh, Alice Robinson and Mykaela Saunders. They chose a shortlist of eight stories from more than 400 entries. First place is awarded $5000 and two runners-up are awarded $750 each.

Several previous winners of the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award have gone on to publish their books, making this a great incentive for writers with varying levels of experience to give it a go. The winning manuscript is eligible to carry the Sydney Taylor Manuscript seal and a copy of the manuscript will be included with the winner’s book.

There are a few ways to enter this award. You can send a letter to the committee (see contact information below) or email a brief description of your writing to [email protected]. The committee will then judge the writing and notify the winner in January.

This award is open to students who are currently enrolled at the University of the Highlands and Islands in any engineering program. The award is presented to a female graduating student who has achieved a successful record of academic achievement and who has shown the desire to develop her engineering skills and knowledge in a professional environment.

Sidney has been a wonderful mentor to the junior staff at the College, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude for his guidance. His enduring support of our endeavors has been unsurpassed.
