How to Play Dominoes

Dominoes are small flat rectangular blocks that are used as gaming pieces. They have a variety of names, including bones, pieces, men, stones, and tiles, but they are usually referred to by their number of pips or spots. The number of pips on one side of the domino is known as its “value.”

When a person plays a domino, they must position it so that it touches a certain end of a line (called a chain) of dominoes called a rally. If a player plays a domino that has upon it a number showing at both ends, it is called stitching up the ends and is a distasteful play.

The pips on a domino can range from six to none, or even blank. Some domino sets have a line in the middle to divide the tile into two squares, each with its own value.

Many people play games with dominoes, especially in China and other Asian countries. There are many different kinds of domino games, including blocking, scoring, and trick-taking games.

Most basic domino games require a set of 28 tiles. The set is shuffled face down in front of the players and each player draws seven tiles, which are then placed on edge for them to see, but not in their hands. The highest domino (the one with the most pips) is called the lead and the player who has the lowest total pips at the end of the game is said to have “lost” the round.

Some of the more advanced domino games also include multiple colors, or doubles, which are used to create branches in the chain. These can be matched with each other by matching the same number of pips on each end of a tile.

A player can lay down a domino with a blank side and only match it with another tile that has a blank side, or they can make the blank side “wild” by ascribe any value to it. In some games, players can also use blanks as spinners, allowing the domino to move around the table.

In the past, a domino would often be a symbol for a particular outcome from a game of chance, such as a dice roll. However, dominos have been used in a wide range of other games, from chess to bingo to solitaire to trick-taking and more.

While these games can be very fun, they can also be a distraction from more important matters. That’s why a lot of people turn to dominoes as a metaphor for life.

It’s easy to lose sight of the big picture when we’re focused on our daily work, or our personal projects. The best way to avoid losing track of the big picture is to set a goal and then take it step-by-step.

For example, you might have a goal for your next project. It might be to write an e-book or a website. That may seem like a daunting task, but by focusing on taking it step-by-step, you can achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself.
