Singapore Prize 2023 Winner Announced
WINNER ANNOUNCED: A single ticket won the Group 2 prize in Singapore’s Toto draw on Oct 2, 2023, with a winning combination of 05-06-27-31 and 04-05-24-35. The winner was from a syndicate and claimed the prize at the Singapore Pools headquarters in Chinatown Point, according to a spokesperson. The total prize money for the winning numbers is $44,905,587, a record high for Singapore Toto prizes, and the largest ever won on a single ticket.
The prize, a biennial award for non-fiction in English, Mandarin or Tamil on Singapore’s history or culture, was first awarded in 2014. It is sponsored by the Department of History at NUS to spur interest in and understanding of Singapore’s complexities and nuances, and encourage greater discussion about the nation’s place in the world.
This year’s shortlist features a book that tackles the question of where Singapore began, as well as a novel that looks at a family’s experiences during the leftist political movements and detentions in Singapore. The list also includes an abridged translation of a work by Kamaladevi Aravindan, who has become the first author in the prize’s history to be shortlisted in both the fiction and non-fiction categories, and a work in Chinese poetry.
Publishers in Asia can find more information on the competition and submission process here, and can register for free to attend the awards ceremony next week at the National Museum of Singapore. The event will feature an exposition of books and authors, as well as talks and readings by the shortlisted writers.
In line with the theme of this year’s event, which focuses on accelerating solutions to repair our planet and build community resilience, a number of new activities will be introduced. These include a special programme called Earthshot Week, which will bring together global leaders from business and government to explore opportunities with The Earthshot Prize winners and finalists in Singapore.
A team of experts will lead this initiative to identify areas where additional partnerships and collaborations can be established. These will be built upon to accelerate Earthshot’s impact and enable scalable solutions that can have a positive impact on humanity.
The event will also launch the inaugural Earthshot Prize Xchange, which brings together global leaders from business and government to accelerate their projects and drive action that can help our planet. This Xchange will bring to the table the experience and expertise of Conservation International (CI) as a long-time global partner, leveraging their extensive network and in-depth knowledge of conservation programmes and sustainability financing across Southeast Asia and the broader region.
