The Basics of Baccarat

It is, after all, the card game James Bond plays in the movies – and he is certainly not alone. In fact, baccarat is the second most popular casino game worldwide behind blackjack. The game is played between the player and banker, with two hands being dealt each round. Players place their bets before the cards are dealt. Each hand is evaluated based on the values of the cards – the sum of all the pips (clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades) determines the score, with nine being the best hand. If the hand total exceeds nine, only the second digit is counted. Aces are always worth one point.
Each hand receives a third card, and the player’s and banker’s scores are compared. The winning hand is the one that is closest to nine, with a tie being the worst result. In a tie, the banker must draw a third card; otherwise, the hand is considered lost and the game must be replayed.
While the game appears complex, its rules are actually fairly simple. Regardless of which bet you place, the odds are always slightly in favor of the banker. The game’s mystique, fueled by an aura of luxury and an image of high-rollers hunching over the table in silky tuxedos and expensive evening dresses, doesn’t change this basic math.
Aside from the banker bet, which is the most statistically favorable option, you can also wager on the Player’s hand. The Player bet pays 1:1, but it is a much riskier wager than the Banker bet.
Side bets are available as well, depending on the establishment or platform. These bets wager that either the player or the banker will receive a pair on the deal. These bets pay 11:1 or 9:1.
