The Sidney Prize 2023 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize
The sidney prize recognises people who have a significant impact on humanity. It’s a great way to thank those who have helped in some way and can help inspire others to do the same. The prize is awarded on a national basis and can be given to any person or organisation who has made a positive contribution to the human race. The prize has been awarded to a number of different groups including the Black Lives Matter movement and the Sydney Opera House art history department.
The 2023 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize is open to any undergraduate writer, not just those studying English. The winner, Yeena Kirkbright’s “Camperdown Grief Junk”, will receive $5000 and two runners up will each be paid $2750. The judges, Laura Elvery, Paige Clark and Michael Winkler, would like to thank all of the writers who entered.
He was an outstanding educator, an innovative leader in science and liberal arts education and a tireless advocate for scholarly freedom. He argued that scientists need a strong foundation in humanities and social sciences, while nonscientists should gain a greater appreciation for scientific work. His vision resulted in a major change at Yale, where the undergraduate curriculum was broadened to include required courses across all disciplines.
A prolific author, Sid penned over twenty books on a wide range of topics. A lifelong skeptic, he often challenged accepted dogma and was willing to explore new ideas. He believed in the importance of academic freedom and fought to ensure that scientists could publish their results without fear of censorship.
At MIT, Sid majored in physics, but in his final semester he took an introductory course in molecular biology and became fascinated by the young field of genetics. He decided to pursue graduate studies in molecular biology, and he worked on bacteriophage T4 DNA replication under Leonard Lerman at the University of Colorado, earning his doctorate in biophysics in 1967.
As a Hertz fellow, Ray encouraged other fellows to collaborate with colleagues from other institutions and nations. He also envisioned and launched the Hertz Summer Workshops, which have become a central part of the Hertz community. The Ray Sidney Volunteer Leadership Award is named in his honor to recognize those who demonstrate loyalty to high ideals and encourage their peers to do the same. The award includes a $50,000 prize and a certificate citing the recipient’s contributions. The prize is funded by a generous endowment from entrepreneur Jay Jones.
