The Sidney Prize and the Hillman Award
Sydney Prize – The Sydney Film Festival honours the remarkable talents of filmmakers around the world with the presentation of a prestigious line-up and a record-breaking prize pool. Each year the Festival presents nine illustrious awards, including the Sydney Film Prize. Winners are selected by a panel of industry judges in a rigorous process.
The Program on Law and Society in the Muslim World at Harvard University will award a prize of $1,000 annually to the best paper written by an HLS student on a topic related to the field of law and society or law and social change in a Muslim majority or minority context. The papers eligible for consideration will be those written during the current academic year in conjunction with a course, seminar, clinic, or independent study project at the Law School.
Established in memory of the late Professor Sidney Hook, a Phi Beta Kappa member and distinguished scholar in philosophy, undergraduate teaching, and leadership in the cause of liberal arts education. The prize carries a cash award of $3,500 and a plaque.
This annual prize honors a graduating student who has shown exemplary promise for future success through leadership, service, and achievement in his or her first two years of graduate study. The prize was established through a gift from the estate of Sidney L. Wagman ’51. The award is given to a student who demonstrates commitment to loyalty to high ideals and shows an unusual interest in promoting U.S-East Asian understanding through work and study, as well as a plan to further this work in the future.
The annual Sidney Taylor Book Award is an initiative of the 2024 Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee, a group of children’s literature experts who review and recommend children’s books published during the previous year that have merit and are worth reading. The winners are announced each January at the AJL Annual Meeting and published in the AJL Book List.
A monthly prize awarded for investigative journalism in service of the common good, administered by The Hillman Foundation and named after Sidney Hillman, former president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America labor union (ACWA), a precursor to Unite Here and now Workers United (SEIU). The foundation also administers a series of monthly Hillman Awards for Journalists and a series of monetary prizes called the Sidney Prizes.

The Irving Oberman Memorial Awards are established by a bequest from Isabel B. Oberman in memory of her husband, Irving Oberman AB 1917. The prize is given to a student who writes the best paper on one of seven current legal subjects: bankruptcy; constitutional law and equal justice under the law; family law; intellectual property; law and technology; and legal history.
The Event Cinemas Rising Talent Award is a prestigious short film prize, supported by Dendy, that celebrates Australian short films and their makers. This year’s winning short film is The Dancing Girl and the Balloon Man directed by Sophie Somerville.
